Spring catchment

Springs are a natural escape of underground water, from the water table or aquifers. They have always been used as a water supply, and ‘catching’ a spring is an age old skill requiring a high degree of expertise and experience. Water will always find the easiest point of escape from the ground and care has to be taken when ‘catching’ a spring not to divert the flow. If you have a spring on your property that you would like to use as a water supply one of our experienced engineers will conduct a feasibility survey of your site.  Most springs are very reliable but should you require, we can carry out yield test to establish the suitability of your spring as a supply.

Water Spring

Installation

We capture the spring at the point it rises to the surface collecting the water into a specially prepared surface sealed collection chamber, to prevent contamination from surface run off and vermin. This then feeds into a storage tank that ultimately supplies the water to the point of use. The excess water is then run via an overflow out of the tank either to drain or prepared watercourse.

The System

Spring catchment system

All tanks and overflows will be fitted with gauze filters and lids to maintain the standards required of a modern water supply

The location of the spring in relation to the point of use will dictate the type of installation required.  To move the water and get the pressure required at the final point of use a pump may be installed within the collection tank or gravity may be used. Every spring installation is tailored to your requirements.

Water Quality

The quality of spring water is usually good, but less dependable than that of a borehole as it can come into contact with contaminates and surface water, to ensure the quality is fit for drinking we strongly advise a water test be carried out. We offer basic water testing in-house, this will give an indication of the hardness, ph and nitrate levels, as well as indicating the presence of bacteria, ecoli and coliforms. If preferred we can arrange for a full laboratory analysis to be carried out. Once the results are available any water treatment equipment necessary can be recommended and installed.
